I’ve been following the recent World Cup matches and I try not to miss the games involving Brazil. i have concluded that the team strugles because the flair associated with their stlye of football is missing. In this article I will look at some reasons why this may have changed.
Brazil’s current men’s national team is still one of the world’s strongest, but many fans feel it no longer plays with the effortless flair that made earlier generations legendary. That perception comes from a combination of football, culture, and the evolution of the global game rather than a single cause.
1. The game has changed
The Brazil teams of the 1950s, 1970s, and even the early 2000s played in an era that allowed more space and time on the ball. Today, international football is:
- Faster
- More tactical
- More physically demanding
- More data-driven
Modern opponents press aggressively and leave little room for the improvisation that was once Brazil’s trademark.
2. European football has become the classroom
Most of Brazil’s top players now move to Europe as teenagers.
Instead of developing entirely within Brazil’s football culture, they spend their formative years at clubs like Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona, Manchester City F.C., or Paris Saint-Germain F.C..

These qualities improve players but can also reduce the spontaneous, street-football style historically associated with Brazil.
3. Street football has declined
Many legendary Brazilian players, including Pelé, Zico, Ronaldinho, and Ronaldo, developed their creativity by playing countless informal games on streets, beaches, and small-sided pitches.
Today’s young players are more likely to grow up in structured academies with organized coaching. Those systems produce technically polished athletes but may leave less room for the improvisation that flourished in informal football.

4. Brazil has prioritized balance
Recent Brazilian teams have often been built around defensive stability.
The great Brazil sides of the past accepted defensive risks because they believed their attack could overwhelm opponents.
Modern coaches tend to emphasize:

- Tactical organization
- Controlled possession
This style often produces better defensive records but can appear less entertaining.
5. The legends set an almost impossible standard
When fans think of Brazil, they remember extraordinary generations featuring players such as:

Can Brazil regain its flair?
Yes, but it will require finding the right balance between modern tactical discipline and the creative instincts that have long defined Brazilian football.
Brazil doesn’t need to abandon today’s tactical sophistication. Instead, it needs to encourage creative players to take calculated risks while maintaining team structure. If a generation combining the discipline of the modern game with the imagination of Brazil’s footballing tradition emerges, the famous jogo bonito (“the beautiful game”) could flourish again.
In many ways, Brazil’s challenge reflects a broader trend in world football: as tactics and athleticism have become more sophisticated, the moments of individual genius that once defined the sport have become rarer—but perhaps even more valuable when they appear.
Wit the above in mind I would not be surprise if Brazil fail to reach the semi-finals.
