Did You Know? Fun Facts About Today’s Caribbean Cricketers

West Indies cricket has always given us entertainers—players who surprise fans with their flair, passion, and unforgettable moments. Beyond the scorecards, there are stories and trivia that make these cricketers even more fascinating. Here are some fun “Did You Know?” facts about a few of today’s rising and established Caribbean stars.

Shimron Hetmyer

Did you know Hetmyer captained the West Indies Under-19 team to their first-ever World Cup victory in 2016? Known for his fearless batting, he once blasted a century off just 82 balls against India at Vizag in 2018. When Hetmyer gets going, bowlers usually have nowhere to hide.

Sherfane Rutherford

Did you know Rutherford first made headlines in the CPL when he smashed 45 runs from only 13 balls? He was part of the 2018 ICC Under-19 squad alongside Hetmyer, and his career since then has been a blend of big hitting and exciting franchise cricket stints around the world.

Kyle Mayers

Did you know Kyle Mayers scored a sensational 210 not out on debut against Bangladesh in 2021? That innings not only made him the talk of the cricket world, but it also sealed the highest-ever successful run chase in Asia. Fun twist—before cricket, Mayers was into javelin throwing back home in Barbados!

Shai Hope

Did you know Shai Hope is the only player in ODI history to score centuries in both innings of a Test at Headingley (against England in 2017)? Cool and composed at the crease, Hope also played school football before cricket became his true calling.

Brandon King

Did you know Brandon King’s breakout moment came in CPL 2019 when he scored an unbeaten 132 off just 72 balls? Following in his father’s footsteps as a cricketer, King has become one of the most consistent T20 openers in the region, averaging over 40 in the CPL.

Keacy Carty

Did you know Keacy Carty is the first cricketer from St. Maarten to play for the West Indies? His most famous innings came in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup final, where his calm, unbeaten 52 earned him Man of the Match and the trophy for the Caribbean.

Odean Smith

Did you know Odean Smith has bowled at speeds touching 150 km/h? Add to that his six-hitting ability, and he’s the definition of an impact player. No wonder he caught the eye of IPL scouts, making his debut in 2022 with Punjab Kings.

✨ From record-breaking feats to little-known backstories, Caribbean cricket continues to produce personalities who light up the game. Stay tuned for more “Did You Know?” spotlights as we uncover fun facts about your favorite players, past and present.

My Voice in the Game We Love

I am a Sales Executive and Life Coach by profession, but at heart, I have always been a student and admirer of cricket. This game has given us unforgettable memories, uniting people across cultures, generations, and nations. Over the years, cricket has evolved—new formats have emerged, new heroes have risen—but at its core, it remains the game we love.

Through this platform, I want to add my voice to the conversation. Beyond scores and statistics, cricket is about stories, lessons, and the emotions it stirs in all of us. Here, I invite you to join me for meaningful discussions—about the sport’s past, present, and future. Together, we can celebrate the legends, debate the changes, and reflect on what cricket truly means to us as fans and as people.

Because cricket is not just a game. It’s a mirror of life itself—discipline, resilience, passion, and joy all rolled into one.
